procedural writing

We have been learning to describe a process.
When I write, I need to think about the ideas,
structure & language, organization, vocabulary,
sentences, spelling and punctuation I use.

Ideas
Structure and Language
Organization
Vocabulary
Sentence Structure
Spelling
Punctuation
-choose ideas that will be important for the reader
-write using a range of ideas, experiences or items of information
-support some of my ideas with detail
-use simple text structure which is appropriate to my purpose   e.g - describe, recount, narrate
-explore different text types (e.g explanation, procedure)
-show that different text types have different features
-choose appropriate adjective, verbs, nouns, and adverbs.
-sequence my ideas logically in a range of text types
-group similar ideas into paragraphs or steps
-Use a bullet point or number to separate the different steps
-use words to show order; first, then, next
-add interest to my writing by using written and visual language features (eg simile, metaphor, illustrations, and diagrams).
-use topic related vocabulary
-expand my vocabulary using common prefixes
-structure my writing so it is grammatically correct in the  present tense
-write simple and compound sentences (by using conjunctions)
-use some conjunctions correctly eg: FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
-use some complex sentences
-vary my sentence beginning, structures, and length
-use reference sources with support to check meanings and find new words
-use spelling patterns to help me
-write consonant, blends and vowel sounds.
-use capital letters
-use full stops
-use question marks
-use exclamation marks

I can use these correctly most of the time:
-speech marks
-commas for lists and apostrophes for contractions

Key Vocabulary that will help me:
Electricity,battery,bulb,connect,light,switch.

Start writing here:
To make a light bulb work you need to make sure that you have:
3 wires
1 battery
1 light bulb
1 switch
First you need to connect the two wires to the battery and the light bulb and
the other wire to the other side of the light bulb. Third, you need to connect
the switch between the wire that connects to the bulb and the battery. When
you turn the switch on the light will turn on with it and if you turn it off the
light bulb will turn off. That is how you make a light bulb turn on.
Fourth you need to turn the switch on so that the light bulb can turn on.

Mindfulness

In Room 4, we’ve been learning to be
mindful.

Being mindful is helpful for me because
I can
learn how to stay calm, happy and
peaceful.

There are different ways to do
mindfulness.
We can do mindful moving, mindful
eating
or mindful breathing.

The best way for me to do mindfulness
is
mindful breathing.

This is because I can practice taking
time
with my breathing and to practice to stay
calm
when I am excited.

On this page of free resources, I
recommend
you try happy heart because it can
help you
to make the focus on your breathing
and it
helps you to get ready for learning.

Justice and injustice

In Room 4, we’ve been thinking about things that are just and unjust.

We’ve been reading a book called ‘Dawn Raids’ by Pauline Smith.

We’ve been thinking about what is just or unjust in the story.

I think it was fair when the police let Joe get Grandma and Grandpa's
passports because they Just came from Samoa and they couldn't understand
English very well.

I think it was unfair when the police didn't let the girls get their blanket when
they were in their PJs because it is kind of scary when people look at you with
your PJs on.

We’ve also been learning about the treaty of Waitangi.
\ We’ve been finding out about promises that were broken.

I think it was fair when the Minister said it was time to help
the Maori who had lost all the land because of the Queen’s
actions and because she threatening the Maoris

It thinks it was unfair when the British broke the treaty that they
made for the Maori to sign for agreements about the land.

I was able to make some connections between these things and my life.

In my life, it’s fair when I do something for my mum and she does something
for me.

In my life, it’s unfair when my sister gets some new pair of jeans and I don't.

When that unfair thing happened, I just sat down and made faces and moans.

Swimming Learning Story

I have been learning swimming at Cannons Creek Pool.

In swimming, I’m really good at…
  • Freestyle
  • Backstroke

I’ve been learning to float on the water without using my hands to lift me up from the bottom
of the pool.

Something I’d still like to learn is how to hold my breath underwater for a really long time.

padlet learning storie

We have been learning about a new tool to show our learning.  Our tool was a padlet.
You can make arrows that connect ideas or pieces of information.
You can add pictures to show you idea or information.

We have used a padlet to communicate our ideas about the stories we've learnt about Porirua.
We've been thinking about how knowing our past helps us prepare for our future.

I connected my self to Porirua because this is where I’ve lived ever since I was a baby.
I connected Te Rangihaeata to Te Rauparaha because he is the Nephew of Te Rauparaha.
I connected Kupe to the wheke because kupe was the one who killed the wheke in Porirua Harbour.

Inati

                        Inati
Room 4 is learning how to be like the people who are showing Inati

The jobs that are needed are the men for the fishing, the ladies
who count
the food and the people who give the food out. The skills for
the fishing job
is to make sure that you know how big the fish so you know
which fishing rod
you have to get so that the rod does not break when you
go fishing.

The skill that you needed to be able to count the food is to make sure
that there is enough fish for all the families in the village and that you
give
them the right amount of fish so that they can eat. The skills that are
needed
for the people who give out the fish to make sure that you give the
family the
right amount of food because they might not eat the whole thing
themselves
and the big family might have a small amount and will not survive.

Room 4 can be like the Inati people if they are keen about giving
other people
your ideas, smiles, Pukana, and friendship to show you’re not
going to sign out
and that you want to make people feel wanted and to show
that you care about
them.

Now you know how Inati works in New Zealand and
Tokelau.

Plant Trays 1

Seiola’s Maths learning Story
The Problem:
Planting Trays 1
We are preparing to grow some seeds to plant on the bank down to the basketball court.
We have 27 trays that will grow 6 seedlings each.
How many plants can we grow?

What different ways can you show how you solved this?

How we solved the problem:
First I

Then I

Next I……

Working as a group is important:  Choose 2 to write about
I am good at….  because….
I am getting better at ….. because …..
It’s hard for me …… because …...
I need to work on because….

I am going to tell you about the most challenging Kapa Haka because when I started I didn't know how to do the pukana so I just stood there like I was a stick. When I turned 8 I was getting better at doing my pukana because when I was at my aunt's house my cousin was teaching me how to do a pukana and she also taught me how to do the wiri and that is why I am so good at them.when I am doing my pukana people just laugh at me so then instead of a pukana I have a sad face.the only way I can conquer my sad face is to just look straight to the front and still have my pukana. My other most challenging event was pedal ready because we always had to ride really slowly on the top court and because people tried to make me slow down by trying to distract me while I was riding my bike. Sometimes I find it annoying because one time I fell off my bike because someone said that my laces were untied then I looked down and it wasn’t untied. Then I looked up and hit another bike by accident. So the only way I can stop crashing into other bike’s is to ignore those people how are trying to distract me. My last most challenging event is poly club because I am kind of shy when I go up on the stage in front of everyone like my family and friends.sometimes when I go on stage I either vomit or cry.the only way I can conquer my fear is to close my eyes when I am up on stage.

Unveiling

Seiola’s Maths learning Story
The Problem:

Unveiling
Marino and Julie are in Rarotonga celebrating her Mum’s
unveiling.  235 people were invited to the celebration but then
68 people didn’t show up.  How many people came to the
unveiling?

What different ways can you solve this problem?

How we solved the problem:
First I did 235-68 then I split the 68 into 34 and 34 because I wanted to make an even number
then I did 235-34=201 then I did 201-34=167

Then I found out that there were only 167 people that came to the unveiling.

Working as a group is important:  Choose 2 to write about
I am good at keeping people on track because I would always say, “Here. I will tell you my
idea and you write it down.”

It’s hard for me to understand what other people are saying when they try to tell me their ideas
because sometimes I just get confused

Learning Though Play

Last week, when we were doing play, I saw Darius, Te-Ana, and Tinatali playing Twilight. I thought that they wouldn't let me play. Then I heard Te-Ana run up to me and say, “You can play” and while we were playing all I could hear was Te-Ana laughing at Darius trying to catch her because she called him slow.

Then I got very hot so I went uuyt5to play with the playdoh under the shade. When I got there Fou said that he was going to make a pizza but I said ‘‘What are you going to make it with? We’re not doing P

cooking.’’ Then he said ‘‘No, I’m making it with playdoh.’’ When I heard his idea, I thought that I could do the same thing but bigger and cheesier than other pizzas.

After that, I went to the Electronics room and I saw Eddie making a driver move with batteries so I made the same but it just made a light turn on. I didn't want to make that thing turn on because people would ask if I can tell them how to make a light bulb turn on and off so I ran out of the door quickly.
